Efforts are under way to arrange a meeting between Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat and Israeli Cabinet minister Shimon Peres. Israeli media reported that Prime Minister Ehud Barak spoke by phone with Arafat last week and warned him Israel would step up its response if the violence in the territories does not subside.
