The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to reduce the number of its peacekeepers serving in southern Lebanon. The body also called on the Lebanese government to take control of territory along the border with Israel, an area that Hezbollah gunmen have used as a staging ground for attacks on the Jewish state. Palestinians fired a mortar shell into a settlement in the Gaza Strip, hitting a house but causing no injuries, according to the Israel Defense Force. The army called the incident at the Netzarim settlement “very serious and grave.”
