U.S. efforts to broker an Israeli-Palestinian peace accord failed because the Palestinians were not “focused on making peace,” according to the U.S. ambassador to Israel. Martin Indyk said the Palestinians saw the peace process as a way to end the Israeli presence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. but he doesn’t believe the Palestinians “were really looking for peaceful coexistence, which is what Israel’s objective was in this process.”
