Progressive Jews in Germany are holding back their threatened lawsuit against the federal government. In an open letter to the head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Jan Muehlstein, head of the Union of Progressive Jews in Germany, told the president of the Central Council, Paul Spiegel, he would wait for the outcome of April meetings between Spiegel and German government representatives before deciding whether to sue the federal government for funding guaranteed under the constitution. It was the latest in a series of open letters between the two groups, which have yet to meet since the Central Council signed a historic contract with the federal government in January 2003 that gave it government funding.
