A Portuguese diplomat who saved thousands of Jewish lives during World War II is being honored on the 50th anniversary of his death. Aristides de Sousa Mendes, who was consul general in Bordeaux, France, during the war, issued visas to 30,000 Jews against the orders of Portuguese dictator Antonio Salazar.
