Israel backed away from its plan to allow armed Palestinian Authority police. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had planned to allow P.A. police to carry arms in hopes that they would rein in chaos in Palestinian areas, but it is unlikely to be carried out because of right-wing Israeli outcry at the idea of arming potential terrorists, Ha’aretz reported Tuesday.
