Condoleezza Rice said the U.S. position on Hezbollah has not changed, but officials said the government could consider a political role for the group in Lebanon if it disarmed. The U.S. secretary of state did not explicitly label Hezbollah a terrorist organization in comments to the media Thursday. But she said American perception of the organization — labeled as a foreign terrorist organization on the State Department’s list — has not changed in recent days, despite its ability to bring hundreds of thousands of people to a pro-Syrian rally in Beirut.
