Jewish groups gather for Latin celebration

Jewish groups sent representatives to Latin America to celebrate the 40th anniversary of a Venezuelan Jewish group. The Confederación de Asociaciones Israelitas de Venezuela, the
umbrella organization for Venezuelan Jewry, celebrates its anniversary this weekend. Organizers expect representation from major Jewish groups, including World Jewish Congress Secretary-General Stephen Herbits; American Jewish Committee Executive Director David Harris; Latin American
Jewish Congress President Jack Terpins; Argentinian Jewish leaders Luis Grynwald, head of AMIA, and Angel Shindel of DAIA; Michael Salberg of the Anti-Defamation League; and representatives from B’nai Brith International and Jewish communities in Europe, Israel and Latin America. Argentine First Lady Cristina Fernandez, who has worked to mend ties between Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and the Jewish community, will be the keynote speaker.
