Russia’s Chabad umbrella group is launching an interfaith charity to help Russian war veterans and the handicapped. The Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia will be collaborating with the Russian Orthodox Church and the Central Muslim Board in the project, according to the Interfax news agency. “Certainly the care of the disabled and veterans is a matter of concern for the state, but religious organizations come out with an offer of their help here, too,” said federation spokesman Rabbi Aaron Gurevich. Gurevich said that though the new charity is still in the process of registering with the Ministry of Justice, it already has begun working in the Volga-Urals area. Some aid recipients reportedly will be sent to Israel for medical treatment, where the quality of health care is considerably stronger than in Russia.
