A Bahraini historian has published a book detailing the history of the tiny Jewish community of Bahrain.

The release of Nancy Khedouri’s 110-page volume, “From Our Beginning to Present Day,” this summer followed her meeting with King Hamad ibn Isa al-Khalifah in the capital city of Manama. “I was deeply touched by his praise toward my efforts, and he made me feel very comfortable in his presence,” said Khedouri, 33, one of only 36 Jews left in the oil-rich Persian Gulf kingdom.

Khedouri’s early June audience with the king, required by local custom before the book could be distributed, received widespread publicity in local media.

“There’s been a lot of demand for this book to be translated into Arabic, and we’ve been working on that,” said Khedouri, who is fluent in Arabic and like most of her Jewish friends growing up in Bahrain excelled in Koran studies.
