One Jewish congressman is succeeding another as the chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee.
Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.), formerly the powerful committee’s deputy chairman, was elected Tuesday by Democratic lawmakers in a unanimous voice vote. He ran unopposed.
Berman became acting chairman last month following the death of Tom Lantos, also a California Democrat and the only Holocaust survivor elected to the House.
Four of the chairmen of the committee’s seven subcommittees are Jewish.
