Ukraine honored the leader of an advocacy organization for Russian-speaking Jewry.

Mark Levin, the executive director of NCSJ: Advocates on Behalf of Jews in Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic States and Eurasia, received the Order of Merit citation from President Victor Yushchenko in a ceremony held Tuesday in New York.

Levin, the NCSJ’s executive director since 1992, was cited for helping to raise Ukraine’s level of “prestige” in the world by promoting the country’s achievements.

In the past few years he has led NCSJ’s diplomatic efforts in Ukraine to establish policies to protect the civil rights of the country’s Jews. Levin also has guided efforts to supply financial and technical support to the former Soviet Union.
