WASHINGTON (JTA) — A top U.S. State Department official wants Israel to provide more information about land mines it left behind in Lebanon after the 2006 war.

In an appearance Tuesday before the House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs subcommittee on the Middle East, Jeffrey Feltman, acting assistant secretary of state for Near East affairs, said he was encouraged by signs from the United Nations that Israel could be preparing to offer more data, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Feltman, one of two administration officials to travel to Damascus earlier this month, also defended attempts to engage with Syria, saying that the administration still was concerned about Syria’s support of Hamas and Hezbollah and that the decision to talk was just a change in tactics. He added that no deal with Syria "would be made at Lebanon’s expense."
