On Holocaust Remembrance Day, Klein, Pence Announce Legislation Condemning Rise in Anti-Semitism
Washington, D.C. – This Holocaust Remembrance Day, Congressman Ron Klein (D-FL) and Congressman Mike Pence (R-IN), the co-chairs of the bipartisan Congressional Task Force Against Anti-Semitism, announced that they will introduce legislation condemning rising trends in anti-Semitic activity in the United States and abroad.
The resolution authored by Klein and Pence, to be introduced this week, calls on the Secretary of State to reaffirm America’s national commitment to fighting anti-Semitism as a foreign policy priority and to convey U.S. concerns on the topic in bilateral meetings with Foreign Ministers.
“Holocaust Remembrance Day means one thing: never again,” Klein said. “In writing this legislation, we keep in mind our responsibility to fight against hate and intolerance wherever it may arise. On the occasion of Yom Hashoah, this responsibility takes on special meeting. Today and every day, we honor the millions of innocent men, women and children who lost their lives in the Holocaust, as well as the brave survivors and righteous individuals who risked their own lives to resist the Nazi terror.”
“It is fitting that on this day set aside for remembering one of humanity’s darkest chapters that we renew and reaffirm our commitment to ending hatred and prejudice of all types,” Pence said. “The Holocaust serves as a tragic reminder that vigilance is of the utmost importance in guarding against the cancerous spread of hate. In light of recent cases which hearken back to our troubled past, let us recommit ourselves to combating anti-Semitism in all its forms.”
Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom Hashoah) is marked each year on the 27th of the Hebrew month of Nissan, which falls this year on April 21st. In the last several months, Jewish communities in several parts of the world have reported cases of physical assault, damage to businesses, cemeteries and places of worship, as well as anti-Semitic incitement at rallies and demonstrations.
