Approved West Bank construction reportedly already under way

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Most of the new West Bank construction permits just approved were for sites that already were approved or where work was under way, an Israeli daily reported.

Ha’aretz found that in the six communities where construction was approved Monday by Defense Minister Ehud Barak, most had previously been approved — as far back as 1989 — by previous governments.

The newspaper also reported that the construction permits were given on condition that the buildings are completed in two months, at the risk of the permit being rescinded.

The Ariel sports park also approved Monday has been in existence for more than a year, and a demolition order had been issued against it, Ha’aretz reported.
