NEW YORK (JTA) — President Obama is weighing a new American plan for Middle East peace, a Washington Post columnist reported.
In his column Wednesday, David Ignatius cited two unnamed administration sources who said Obama is "seriously considering" putting forth a proposal to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
According to one of the officials, the plan would be linked to the issue of Iran, whose suspected nuclear weapons program is the top strategic priority of Israel’s leaders and the top legislative agenda item for the American pro-Israel community.
"Incrementalism hasn’t worked," one of the officials is quoted as saying. "As a global power with global responsibilities, we have to do something." The plan, he said, would "take on the absolute requirements of Israeli security and the requirements of Palestinian sovereignty in a way that makes sense."
The proposal could be launched by the fall, one of the officials said.
