Bush I backs START

CNN’s Ed Henry tweets, a single sentence from Bush 41:

"I urge the United States Senate to ratify the START treaty."

Add the ex-president to an array of former GOP secretaries of state, secretaries of defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff supporting the arms reduction treaty with Russia. The Obama administration is getting its GOP ducks in a row to beat down the resistance in the Senate, led by Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.).

I’ve heard there’s been outreach to Bush 43, under whom the current negotiations were launched. My guess is that it doesn’t happen: George W. Bush has been careful to keep out of partisan frays, and this is not the issue to move him.

Here’s our story on Jewish organizational backing (with some caveats), based on the calculus that keeping Russia close is critical to keeping Iran isolated.
