Netanyahu rival Danon elected head of Likud Central Committee

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Danny Danon, who said the Likud Party and Israel’s governing coalition are opposed to a two-state solution, was elected chairman of the party’s Central Committee.

The victory by Danon, Israel’s deputy defense minister,  was a blow to party leader Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister. Danon pledged to work with Netanyahu for the good of the party.

Some 80 percent of the Central Committee’s 3,600 members voted Sunday. The Central Committee makes decisions for the party and can change its constitution.

Danon in an interview with an Israeli publication picked up by news services around the world also said Likud and the coalition would block a vote on the creation of a Palestinian state.
