TEL AVIV (JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was released from the hospital after undergoing successful hernia surgery.
Netanyahu left Hadassah Medical Center in Ein Kerem, Jerusalem, on Sunday afternoon after having a procedure for an umbilical hernia the previous evening.
Dr. Aryeh Dorset, a cardiology expert, and Dr. Aviram Nissan, who directs the hospital’s surgical division, performed the surgery, which took about an hour while Netanyahu was under general anesthesia.
Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon served as acting prime minister during the surgery.
Netanyahu had felt pain on Saturday and was diagnosed by Dorset and his personal physician, Dr. Tzvi Berkowitz, according to an announcement on the prime minister’s Facebook page. A CT scan confirmed the umbilical hernia diagnosis.
