ATHENS, Greece (JTA) — The parliament in Greece voted to cut off state funding for the ultranationalist Golden Dawn party.
On Wednesday, lawmakers voted to 241 to 26 to suspend $1.2 million in funding for the party, which has been called neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic. The party was eligible for funding after 18 members were elected to parliament last year.
The move is part of an ongoing crackdown against Golden Dawn, whose leaders have been arrested and charged with running a criminal organization. Its leader, Nikolaos Michaloliakos, has publicly denied the Holocaust, as have other party members.
As part of the efforts to combat Golden Dawn, a bill introduced recently would bar funding for parties whose leaders are charged with involvement in a criminal organization or terrorism.
