(JTA) — Britain joined the United States in declaring opposition to the new Palestinian draft proposal introduced in the United Nations on Tuesday calling for peace with Israel within 12 months of an agreement.
Jordan circulated the draft, which also demands that Israel withdraw its borders to “1967 lines,” to the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday. On Monday, the U.S. announced that it does not support the draft and would likely use its veto to block it if necessary.
Reuters reported that British U.N. ambassador Mark Lyall Grant expressed his delegation’s opposition to the draft but did not explicitly threaten to veto the Palestinian proposal.
“There’s some difficulties with the text, particularly language on time scales, new language on refugees,” he said. “So I think we would have some difficulties.”
All of the Arab U.N. delegations endorsed the draft, but Jordanian ambassador Dina Kawar, the lone Arab representative on the 15-member Security Council, said that she would have liked more time to read the proposal.
The timing of a possible vote remains unclear.
