(JTA) — Two Hasidic Jews from New York drowned Tuesday in a riptide that pulled five people into the ocean at a South Florida beach.

Yitzchak Rosenberg, owner of Certified Lumber and developer of several properties in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, died near Miami, the Orthodox news site Vos Iz Neias reported. Chaim Parnes, a diamond dealer who nearly died in a violent robbery during a visit to Miami in November, also drowned.

According to Vos Iz Neias, the two were among five Hasidic vacationers from Brooklyn and upstate New York’s Hasidic village of Kiryas Joel who were pulled out by the riptide at Haulover Beach late Tuesday morning.

They were swimming in the unguarded spot so that they would not be swimming with unmodestly clothed women, an unnamed friend told the Miami Herald.

Of the three survivors, two are in stable condition and one got out unharmed.
