The Klau Library, a $1, 675, 000 four-story structure, commemorating the name of David W. Klau, former New York civic and business leader, who had been a vice-chairman of the board of governors of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, was dedicated here today by the HUC-JIR. It constitutes the first phase of a $15, 000, 000 master plan for the development of the college’s facilities at all of its centers, here, in New York and Los Angeles.
The dedication ceremony was addressed by Secretary of Labor Arthur J. Goldberg who paid tribute to the HUC-JIR for its devotion to Judaism and to a broad field of Education. Another speaker was Avraham Harman, Israel’s Ambassador to Washington. The past and present importance of the Hebrew Union College as the oldest Reform Jewish seminary in this country was stressed by Dr. Julian Morgenstern, president emeritus of the seminary.
The four-day ceremonies here included also the ordaining of this year’s class of rabbis and the awarding of 14 honorary degrees. Among those who received the honorary degree of doctor of humane letters were Secretary Goldberg; Ambassador Harman; Professor William Haber, of the University of Michigan; Professor Paul Freund, of Harvard University, Dr. William Andrew Irwin, professor emeritus of Old Testament at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, and Dr. Walter C. Langsam, president of the University of Cincinnati
