The Israeli Air Force today put on an air show over Tel Aviv in connection with the celebration of its sixth anniversary. More than 100 planes took part in the show which displayed the Air Force’s growth from the lone single-engine Piper Cub with which it began, to today’s fleet which contains a number of new British-manufactured Meteor Jets.
The alertness and preparedness of the Israel Army last week prevented an Arab breakthrough into Israel, Israel Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mordecai Makleff declared today after watching Israeli units work out a problem in regional defense.
Speaking from a platform flanked by mortars and ploughs to symbolize the dual role of agriculture and defense assumed by the border settlements, Gen. Makleff stressed the importance of regional defense as a means of repelling aggression. He praised the manner in which reserve units had turned out and been integrated into the regular Army forces in these exercises, which were designed to test every possibility of defense in an area subjected to heavy infiltration.
