When Governor Herbert H. Lehman arrives in Brooklyn next Thursday to be the guest of honor at the dinner at the Hotel St. George opening the Brooklyn Jewish community’s drive for the United Jewish Appeal for German Jewish relief, he will be presented with a check for $50,000 representing the borough’s first contribution to the campaign.
More than 1,000 persons from all walks of life, including distinguished communal and business figures in the borough, will be present at the dinner to pay tribute to the Governor’s long devotion and vital interest in world Jewish affairs, and particularly to his leadership in the United Jewish Appeal, of which he is honorary chairman.
Large groups of volunteer campaign workers organized over weeks of intensive preparation, will begin a thorough canvass of the borough on the opening day of the drive. Under the leadership of Aaron William Levy and Assemblyman Albert D. Schanzer; co-chairmen of the Brooklyn Division of the campaign, the entire Jewish community has been enlisted in the effort to raise relief funds.
The dinner committee includes Ralph Jonas, Edward Lazansky, Harry E. Lewis, Israel Matz, Mitchell May, Benjamin H. Namm, Walter N. Rothschild and Meier Steinbrink, honorary chairmen; Hugh Grant Straus, honorary treasurer; Herman S. Bachrach, Joseph J. Baker, Alexander H. Geismar, Louis Goldstein, Max Kiss, Oscar A. Lewis, Grover M. Moscowitz, Algernon I. Nova, Hyman Schorenstein, Irwin Steingut and Harry Zeitz, honorary vice-chairmen.
MANY TO ATTEND APPEAL CRUISE DANCE
Many socially and politically prominent persons are expected to attend the cruise dance of the Greater New York Junior Division of the United Jewish Appeal at the Hotel Astor, Broadway and Forty-fourth street.
Proceeds of the affair will go toward the relief and rehabilitation of German Jewish refugees and their settlement in Palestine.
The outstanding feature of the program will be the gift of a free cruise to Bermuda on the S. S. Queen of Bermuda, and twenty-five additional free vacations at leading mountain and seaside resorts, which will be awarded as door prizes. Music will be provided by Howard Lanin and his Atlantic Beach Club Orchestra.
