Nearly ten thousand aliens have now been released under the terms of the White Paper, as well as some hundreds released as special cases, it was revealed by Osbert Peake, Home Undersecretary, in the House of Commons yesterday. Peake also made it clear that there was no reflection on any loyal and friendly alien who had been interned in pursuance of general directions.
Replying to T. Edmund Harvey, Peake said the number of releases authorized under the White Paper procedure up to the end of last week was 9,816. Approximately 7,000 men and 3,000 women were still interned in this country. The figures, Peake added, were of persons interned in this country; approximately 6,000 internees had been sent overseas.
