The 100,000th application for indemnification to Nazi victims in the State of Hesse was submitted this week to the state’s indemnification office, it was reported here today. Officials of the State of Hesse claim that more than 12 percent of all indemnification applications throughout West Germany were approved in Hesse. Less than 16,000 claims have yet to be disposed of, either positively or negatively. The state office is now handling an average of 1,300 cases a month, it was stated.
During the eleven postwar years, $40,000,000 was disbursed to Nazi victims in indemnification payments. The amount was $12,500,000 in the period prior to the 1953 enactment of the Federal Indemnification Law, $6,800,000 in 1954, and $19,000,000 in the fiscal year that ended last March. It is expected that claims totaling $25,000,000 will be satisfied in the course of the current budget year, but the larger part will devolve upon the Federal Treasury in Bonn.
