A drive to raise $1,000,000 to care for Jewish children in Russia who have been orphaned by the war will be proclaimed at the Ambijan National Conference on Emergency Aid and Reconstruction for the Victims of Nazism, which opens Saturday evening at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, it was announced today at a press conference called to welcome the Mexico delegation. Principal speaker at the conference will be Soviet Ambassador Andrei Gromyko.
The chief activities of the Ambijan Committee at present is raising funds for the care of 3,500 Jewish war orphans who have been settled in Biro-Bidjan. It is hoped that eventually 30,000 such children will be sent there. In preparation for this large scaled settlement the Ambijan is collecting various types of machinery which will be sent to the children’s homes in order that they may be made as self sufficient as possible . A complete knitting mill has already been sent.
