More than $1,000,000 in contributions to the United Jewish Appeal were announced at a dinner here tonight sponsored by the National Jewish Welfare Board on behalf of the UJA of Greater New York. Walter N. Rothschild, noted Jewish philanthropist, was honored at the dinner for 45 years of communal service.
Speakers at the dinner laid particular stress on Mr. Rothschild’s service during World War II as chairman of JWB’s Armed Services Committee. Diplomats of Great Britain, the Soviet Union and Nationalist China–three of America’s major World War II allies–attended the dinner. They were British Consul John C. Cloake, Nationalist Chinese Consul K.W.Yu and the First Secretary of the Soviet Union’s UN delegation, Nikolai Burov.
