More than a thousand prominent educational and religious leaders gathered here tonight at the University of Chicago’s Mandel Hall at a convocation called by the Jewish Theological Seminary to honor Rabbi Saadia Gaon, the thousandth anniversary of whose death is being celebrated this year. President Robert M. Hutchins of the University of Chicago presided at the meeting.
The honorary degree of Doctor of Letters was conferred by the Seminary on three leading scholars during the meeting. Those receiving the degree were: Arthur H. Compton, Dean of Physical Sciences at the University of Chicago; Robert P. McKeon, Dean of the Division of Humanities at the Chicago University and Julius Guttmann, professor of Jewish Philosophy at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
