More than 103 kitchens supplying 50,000 meals for adults and 10,000 meals for children daily are being operated by the Warsaw office of the Joint Distribution Committee, Executive Vice-Chairman Joseph C. Hyman announced today. Widespread sanitation and health measures in behalf of the Jewish population of Warsaw have also been put into effect by the Polish Jewish medical organization TOZ with funds supplied by the J.D.C., Hyman stated.
Under J.D.C. auspices, emergency living quarters have been set up for more than 20,000 homeless war refugees, whose habitations have been destroyed by fire or bombardments or who have fled to Warsaw from the provinces. A clothing department providing warm garments, underwear and shoes, both new and used, is servicing approximately 25,000 Jews in Warsaw and 20,000 in other parts of Poland. Especially established workshops have been organized to manufacture and repair these articles.
Information reaching the J.D.C. in New York, Hyman said, indicates that its Warsaw representatives are continuing extensive programs of assistance in behalf of the suffering Jewish population of Poland. Funds for the J.D.C. are raised through the United Jewish Appeal, which also includes the United Palestine Appeal and National Refugee Service.
