Ambassador Robert D. Murphy, political adviser to USFET commander Lt. Gen. Joseph T. McNarney, and high American officials were among the guests at a performance here of the Blumenfeld Circus arranged by the JDC for 1,100 Jewish displaced children and 100 American children.
The circus was re-established by the Blumenfeld family after being closed down by Nazi edict for the past ten years, while its members were cruelly persecuted by the Nazis. For the Jewish children – who came from UNRRA camps, the German-Jewish Gemeinde and a camp in the French sector – this was the first circus they had ever attended, and they did not even know how to blow up the balloons that were distributed to them.
