“There is no change in the attitude of the British Government with regard to the establishment of a Jewish Army,” informed quarters stated here today. The statement was made in connection with the demand advanced this week by a number of British parliamentarians requesting the organization of a Jewish Army in Palestine in order to more effectively, fight the Nazi invasion into Egypt.
Routers, the leading British news agency, today quoted the German radio as reporting that “part of the American troops which landed in Basra about three weeks ago and were stationed near Bagdad, are now being transported in the direction of Palestine.” The Nazi broadcast, as quoted by Reuters, estimated that the American armed forces which have already left Basra for Palestine “consisted of an entire motorized division numbering about 11,000 men, or about half the forces landed in Basra several weeks ago.”
The Rome radio today claimed that a large number of Jews had been captured when the Free French outpost of Bir Hakein in Libya fell to the Italian troops on June 11. These Jews, the Italian announcer said, had originally been attached to the French Foreign Legion, but joined Gen. de Gaulle’s forces after the collapse of France.
