The biggest transport of refugees to arrive since the war disembarked here today from the S.S. Macoura, Among the 1,166 arrivals are adults and children from France, England and Italy. The bulk of the immigrants – 817 – came from France, while 159 were from England and 150 from Italy.
Among the children from France are youngaters who left the Bergen Belsen and Buchenwald concentration camps only a few weeks ago. A boy who left Warsaw on May 23 reported that life for the remnants of Jews left in Poland is beginning to approach normalcy, but most Polish Jews desire to emigrate to Palestine. The young immigrants from France said that there were many more Jewish children there who desire to come to Palestine, despite assurances that they would receive free education and proper care in France.
The transport, which was organized by the Jewish Agency and financed by the Joint Distribution Committee, was welcomed on its arrival by representatives of the Agency and Dr. James Heller, president of the United Palestine Appeal in the United States. The Youth Aliyah organization has prepared permanent homes for the children, most of whom are orphans.
