Twelve Israeli civilians whose alertness and courage helped prevent serious terrorist outrages in recent weeks and months, were personally presented with citations by Premier Yitzhak Rabin last Friday. The Premier took the occasion to urge the public to remain alert to avert future tragedies.
The 12 cited included Zipora Klein, of Petach Tikvah, who spotted a bomb near the local police station; and Mrs. Hanna Cohen, a shopper at the Yad Eliahu supermarket in Tel Aviv, Shlomo Itzhak, the market’s manager, and Salmon Menashe, the market’s security officer, whose actions led to the defusing of a time bomb planted in the store by two Arab terrorists on the eve of Rosh Hashana.
Others who received their citations from the Premier at ceremonies in his Tel Aviv office were: Rafael Bikhra and Itzhak Yoav, lifeguards on the beach in Netanya who spotted a pair of Arab terrorists in possession of bombs; Avraham Wilner, a recent immigrant from the Soviet Union and Y. Winchkowsky, civilian volunteer guards at Nahariya who exchanged fire with terrorist infiltrators until re-enforcements arrived; Eliyahu Cohen and Itzhak Hoshbi, civilian guards from Jerusalem who uncovered a large explosive charge at the Mahane Yehuda Market; and Uzzi Tzur and Pinhas Tal, members of Kibbutz Shamir, who organized a counter-attack that resulted in the slaying of three terrorist infiltrators before the police arrived. The award ceremony was attended by national police chief Shaul Rosolio.
