The Havas News Agency reported Sir Oswald Mosley, British Fascist leader, was struck in the face with several stones and women were trampled in a riot which broke up a Blackshirt meeting attended by some 30,000 persons in suburban Holbeck today.
Anti-Fascists acting apparently at a given signal, started a demonstration as Mosley neared the end of his speech. Police arrested several rioters.
Twelve injured spectators were taken to a first aid station for medical attention. One of the injured spectators was reported in serious condition tonight.
Magistrate Langley in Old Street Court yesterday dismissed charges against Alexander Raven Thomson, one of Mosley’s lieutenants, who had been arrested Sept. 13 for using insulting language during an anti-Jewish rally at which he presided.
In dismissing Thompson, Mr. Langley declared: “This court holds and expresses no views on Fascism or Communism. It is not interested in either, but the question of Jew-baiting is a matter on which it has to express an opinion. If the Fascists come down and make whole-sake attacks against a law-abiding community. They will be punished.”
