One hundred and twenty Jewish emigrants left Poland last night for Argentine, Brazil and Uruguay. The party consisted mainly of women and children who were proceeding to South America in order to rejoin fathers and husbands from whom they had been long separated.
The group was accompanied to the boat by a special representative of the Jewish Emigrant Aid Society (JEAS).
James Bernstein, European Director of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid and Sheltering Society (HIAS), saw off the emigrants who traveled comfortably in through trains to Paris.
Mr. Bernstein in a statement made to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, said that the arrangements made for the emigrants and the care taken to ensure their comfort proved convincingly the necessity for the social protection of immigrants as the HIAS is rendering. He called attention to the need for making every effort to secure funds from America for the maintenance. of the work which the HIAS is carrying on in Europe. He added that one of the chief problems at present confronting the HIAS was the necessity for a campaign to assist through Torgsin, relatives of Jews in Russia particularly in connection with the forthcoming Passover.
The Rochester Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People elected Dr. Meyer Jacobstein, former member of Congress, as its president for the coming year at the annual meeting.
Dr. Sol J. Applebaum, prominent in public health work here, was elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Rochester Branch.
