Between 12,000 and 15,000 Jews are expected to emigrate from the American zone of Germany for the United States during the quota year, Ilya Dijour, HIAS director for Germany and Austria, reported at a meeting here of European representatives of the HIAS at which the condition of the surviving Jews of Europe and the possibilities of their emigration from the continent were discussed. Dr. James Bernstein, European director of HIAS, presided.
Dijour disclosed that of the prospective immigrants from the Frankfurt and Munich areas, who will entrain for Bremen tomorrow, 80 percent received their visas through the HIAS. Approximately 2,000 Jewish immigrants departed from France bound for Palestine and other countries during the first four months of 1946, the French representative reported, adding that the tendency toward emigration is increasing among French Jews as well as foreign Jews residing temporarily in the country.
The HIAS representative in North Africa reported on the difficult situation of the local and refugee Jews there. He said that emigration to Palestine or overseas points was the only solution to their problem.
