A party of 66 men and 62 women left New York for Israel tonight as the first contingent in the new Volunteers for Israel program of the American Zionist Youth Foundation. They will spend six months in Israel rebuilding damaged kibbutzim and helping establish new settlements. They have volunteered to do any kind of labor.
While each volunteer has paid $535 for his transportation and room and board in Israel, he will receive allowances for pocket money in Israel. On arrival, the volunteers will be given an orientation program that includes courses in Hebrew, lectures on Jewish history, Israeli culture and politics and the economic, political and social problems of the state.
Fifteen leaders of the National Council of Jewish Women left today for Israel to examine ways in which Council’s experience in education and social service can be used to help Israel cope with problems arising from the war. Mrs. Leonard H. Weiner, national president, led the group, which was invited by the Israeli Government.
Thirty-two university faculty members and Christian clergymen left for Israel on the sixth annual study tour sponsored by the Inter-University Committee on Israel of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation.
