A total of 1,375 persons from the United States and Canada migrated to Israel during 1961, the Jewish Agency office announced here today. The 1961 total represents an increase of 400 immigrants over the 1960 figure.
The Jewish Agency said that the greatest increase in the number of American emigrants was in the category of professionals, who were processed by the Office of Professional and Technical Immigration (PATWA) which sent 311 emigrants to Israel in 1961, compared with 152 in 1960.
Newcomers from the U.S. to Israel in the other categories were 135 Chalutzim from the various Zionist youth groups, 171 immigrants who went to Ulpanim in Israel and 142 retired persons. The remaining categories included middle-class immigrants and members of Hassidic groups.
