One hundred and forty leaders of the United Jewish Appeal arrived here last night on the 10th study mission which will include 12 days of tours and working sessions in Israel. Before their arrival here, subgroups of the mission visited various other countries where they surveyed Jewish refugee and welfare needs. The opening session today was devoted to activities of the Joint Distribution Committee marking its 50th anniversary. Edward W.W. Warburg, UJA honorary president and president of the JDC, presided at the meeting. The mission will lay the groundwork for the 27th annual campaign of the UJA in the United States.
Israeli newspapers issued special supplements today in honor of the UJA mission and JDC work, recalling that it was for the relief of the small Jewish population of Palestine at the outbreak of the First World War that the JDC came into being.
Among the mission members who arrived last night were 12 Jewish leaders who had spent five days in Italy surveying Jewish welfare and refugee needs. They met with U.S. Ambassador G. Frederick Reinhardt, Israeli Ambassador Maurice Fischer and leaders of the Italian Jewish community.
