The War Department announced today that 140 aliens, nearly all of them Jewish refugees from central Europe, would arrive in New York on Sunday, Sept. 22, on the Army transport American Legion from the Canal Zone. They were among those in the Canal Zone who were without passports and were considered by military authorities to have no legal right to remain in that zone.
At the request of the War Department the Immigration Service of the Department of Justice agreed to accept responsibility for the final disposition of these aliens, provided the War Department would transport them to New York. Upon reaching New York the aliens will be turned over to the Immigration Service.
Through the efforts of the President’s Advisory Committee on Political Refugees all those who cannot find homes with relatives in the United States will be offered the status of colonists in the Sosua settlement in the Dominican Republic.
