One hundred and forty-three Jewish refugees from Shanghai, the first group to enter the United States from the Far East since the outbreak of the war, arrived here today aboard the S.S. General Meigs.
The group included 84 rabbis and rabbinical students. The rabbis, of whom there are 58 are proceeding to Canada, while the 26 students are coming to the Lubavitcher Yeshiva in Brooklyn, N.Y. Twelve of the other arrivals will proceed to South America and the remainder will join relatives throughout the United States.
The immigrants were met at the pier by representatives of the National Refugee Service and the San Francisco Committee for Service to Emigrees The NRS is arranging transportation for the 26 bound for Brooklyn. The 58 rabbis going to Canada will be resettled by the Canadian Jewish Congress and the Jewish Immigrant Aid Society. The Joint Distribution Committee helped the 143 obtain their visas and paid for or advanced the passage money for the majority of the group.
