A summary of the activities of the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society of America during eleven months of 1927 is contained in a pamphlet which has just been issued by Hias.
During this period 14,437 Jewish immigrants who arrived in the United States were aided by the Hias. Meals served in the kosher kitchens on Ellis Island numbered 41,729 and 61,222 meals were served to immigrants after arrival. Immigrants and homeless were given 12,831 nights of shelter.
The statistics of the Hias activities also show that 2,739 persons were aided in finding employment, 35,945 persons received advice and guidance, 9,684 documents and affidavits were prepared and certified. Seven thousand six hundred and ninety-five persons received advice toward obtaining American citizenship. Letters from all parts of the world on questions of immigration, answered by the Hias during this time numbered 32,909.
Hias maintains branches in six American cities and bureaus at Ellis Island and Washington. In order to meet the new emigration and immigration conditions. Hias in conjunction with the Ica and Emigdirekt is helping to develop new immigration countries for Jewish emigrants.
