The British general elections yesterday returned to Commons fifteen Jewish candidates, incomplete fig### compiled today revealed.
An interesting result of the election was that Emanuel Shinwell, Laborite, who served as Secretary of Mines Under Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald defeated Mr. MacDonald, who ran on the national Labor Party ticket, by a 20,000 majority in Seaham.
Sir Philip Sassoon, Conservative, under-secretary for the air, was returned in the Hythe constituency by a large majority.
Malcolm MacDonald, Colonial Secretary, son of the former Prime Minister, was defeated in Notts and Bassetlaw, where he ran as a National Liberal. Zionists are waiting to see who will take over the secretaryship, since that position is important in the administration of the Palestine mandate.
E. A. Strauss, National Liberal, was returned to Commons by the Southwark North constituency. A.M. Lyons, Conservative, was re-elected in Leicester.
Barnett Janner, pro-Zionist, was defeated in his re-election campaign in Whitechapel, the Jewish section of London, where he ran as a National Liberal.
Sir Leslie Hore-Belisha, financial secretary to the treasury, a National Liberal, was re-elected in Plymouth by a majority of 11,000. Sir Percy Harris, National Liberal, was re-elected in Bethnal Green constituency.
Major Sir Isidore Salmon, Conservative in Harrow, and Daniel Frankel were among the other Jewish candidates elected.
Sir Herbert Samuel, former High Commissioner of Palestine, a National Liberal, was defeated by the 24-year-old Conservative, Minto Russel, by a majority of 1,157.
Edward Doran, who had warned during the election campaign that the Jews were trying to “get” him, was badly defeated in Tottenham. He had declared that “the Jews” were sending him letters threatening violence.
Col. Josiah Wedgwood, friend of the Zionist movement, was one of the Laborites whose election became a formality on nomination day when no candidates were entered against him.
Oswald Mosley and his Fascist “Mosley Party” did not put up any candidates.
