For the first time, 150 rabbis and their families will make a pilgrimage in a body to the first Hebrew house of worship in the United States, the Touro Synagogue in Newport, during the sessions of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, that convenes in this city, June 25 to 30.
Among the important matters to be considered by the conference during its five-day session here, is the symposium on the Union Prayer Book, preparatory to “a thorough revision of the Prayer Book”, as the resolution passed at the Detroit conference last year instructed. Rabbi Sol B. Freehof of Chicago will speak on the evolution of the liturgy; Rabbi Israel Bettan and Rabbi Samuel S. Cohon, both of Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati, will speak on the function and religious ideas of a prayerbook respectively; and Rabbi Jonah Wise of New York city will discuss the devotional value of the Union Prayerbook.
The whole program of religious education for these days will be analyzed and discussed, with a special emphasis on the subject of “Methods of Teaching the Idea of God to Children”, by Rabbi Louis Wolsey of Philadelphia and Rabbi Barnet R. Brickner of Cleveland. Rabbi Leo M. Franklin of Detroit, a former President of the Conference, will give an important paper on “The Purpose and Possibilities of Synagogue and School Extension in American Reform Judaism”.
