Abba Eban, Israel Minister of Education, told a press conference here today that there were currently 1,500 Israeli scientific and technical specialists working in new countries and that Israel in 1962 had been host to some 1,600 scientific and technical leaders from those countries, providing them with technical facilities.
Mr. Eban, who is head of the 24-man Israeli delegation to the United Nations Conference on Science and Technology to Aid Emergent Nations, offered this data in an assessment of the results to date of the huge conference. He said that the creation of new machinery to help solve the problems of the poorer countries–as has been suggested at the conference–would not make obsolete the multi-lateral activities between states in mutual aid through technical assistance of the type Israel has been providing.
He called speeding up the development of the poor countries one of the “three major problems of our time,” listing the other two as those of Great Power relations and the prevention of nuclear war.
