More than 1,500 Jewish refugees will be cleared monthly by the end of the year from Europe to the Western Hemisphere, Emanuel Rosen, director of the immigration service of the Joint Distribution Committee, stated, arriving at the marine terminal at LaGuardia Field aboard a trans-Atlantic clipper.
Mr. Rosen had been at Lisbon, Portugal, for two years expediting evacuation of Jewish refugees from Europe. He paid tribute to Portuguese officials for their splendid cooperation in aiding his organization’s work among the refugees. He pointed out that since the outbreak of the European war, 36,000 refuges Jews have been evacuated through Portugal to the United States and Pan-American countries.
