1,500 STRIKING PHYSICIANS SUSPENDED FROM HISTADRUT
Some 1,500 physicians working for Kupat Holim, the Histadrut sick fund, were suspended by the Israel Federation of Labor today when they began their three-day stoppage in support of the Israel Medical Association’s demand for wage increases for more than 2,000 doctors working for the government or various national institutions, including the sick fund doctors. The Histadrut executive last night decided to suspend any doctor working for its sick fund who joined the strike.
The physicians today attacked the Histadrut’s action in suspending the sick fund doctors from membership in the labor federation, asserting that the Histadrut made no attempt to negotiate with the doctors on their wage demands. The government, it is understood, fears that granting the doctors an increase may set off a new round of wage increases. The Israeli press today also called the strike a “test case” for further wage increases.
