A spokesman for the Israel Ministry of Religious Affairs reported here that a total of 1,500 Torah scrolls had been collected from other countries for use in Israel synagogues. Many of them came from communities ravaged by the Nazis in Europe.

There are still about 400 smaller synagogues in Israel which continue to lack a Torah scroll, he said. The information was disclosed at a ceremony held at the Israel Goldstein synagogue of the Hebrew University, where a Torah scroll brought to Israel by a group of tourists from Conservative congregations in the United States was turned over to synagogue officials.
